About this destination

Amsterdam rewards families who plan their accessible route in advance. The city’s World Heritage canal ring was not designed for wheelchair users, but the accessible alternatives available today are genuinely excellent.

Getting Around

GVB lines 51–54 and all metro lines are fully accessible. Download the AT5 app before you arrive — it provides real-time accessibility status for every stop, including lift outages.

Canal Experience

Blue Boat Company and Lovers Canal Cruises both operate wheelchair-accessible boats with proper hydraulic boarding ramps. A 75-minute narrated canal tour offers the city’s most distinctive viewpoint without a single kerb or step.

Museums

The Rijksmuseum’s accessibility is exceptional. The Anne Frank House is the one significant limitation — the original building’s staircase cannot be modified, though the new wing and exhibition areas are accessible.

Vondelpark

Amsterdam’s largest park has wide, smooth paths throughout and is dog-friendly. The open-air theatre in summer runs weekend family performances in an accessible outdoor setting.
