About this destination

Tokyo is, by many objective measures, the world’s most accessible large city. Japan’s concept of universal design is embedded in public space planning at every scale, and the 2021 Paralympic legacy accelerated further improvements.

Transport

Every JR and Tokyo Metro station has at least one lift exit. Tactile paving covers every platform edge and corridor. Staff assistance is exceptionally proactive — approach any station staff member and they will accompany you to your destination platform.

Sensory Environment

TeamLab Borderless offers dedicated sensory-friendly morning sessions twice monthly. Ghibli Museum limits visitor numbers creating a genuinely calm atmosphere throughout.

DisneySea & Disneyland

Both parks operate Japan’s equivalent of the DAS pass and provide accessible boarding at every attraction. The quality of execution — the ramp angles, the staff briefing, the zero-rush boarding process — exceeds the US parks in our experience.

Neighbourhoods for Families

For families with sensory-sensitive children we recommend basing yourselves in Ueno or Asakusa — traditional, spacious, easier navigation than the overwhelming Shinjuku and Shibuya districts.
